product designin'
A while back, i was asked to partake in a project to design and develop some funky new kettles. They were intended for mass production, but due to the shitty economy at the time (and to an extent, even now) the factory/production side were not ready to take a chance on something so 'different' and I was given a few existing samples to 'take inspiration from' (read: copy but change slightly). Being one who takes great pride in designing in his own image, of course, i refused. So everything came to a grinding halt, and the project has become stagnant, so now i can show you some of the sketches i came up with.

random characters
woah...s'been over a month since my last post.
And i can't say i've been particularly busy or anything. Just been in an artist's rut lately where i aim to do lots, but run out of momentum when i put pen to paper.
Been sitting on a few semi-finished character sketches, so thought i'd gather em together and make a post out of it. Maybe it'll inspire me to do more.

animation!!!
it was pretty cool working on this
its not that its particularly hard, or any different to what i usually draw in terms of what i put down on paper, but the process is very long and really tests your patience.
I've always loved animation and admire those in the field, but actually doing it gave me a new level of respect for animators.

Another vid!!!
I find that recording the process spurs you on to finish the piece, which means less procrastination. So i'll definitely be doing more.
This one took around 1 hour (getting there), but the quality and details in the piece aren't quite up to scratch. More to learn, clearly.
Don't really know too much about the character (hence the costume isn't quite right), but love the look of him.
And here's the pic:

bamboos
watched a program about chinese watercolours, and more specifically, bamboo paintings, so decided to give it a go....even though its in photoshop.
i realise some parts look shit (like the stalks), but at least some of the leaves look pretty good.
next step - to do it with ink and brushes.
EDIT: well, after a night's sleep, and re-seeing this, i've concluded that it is indeed shit. oh well, all part of the learning curve.

blob
Trying for the cel-shaded with texture look that seems to be so popular these days. Obviously didn't quite turn out the way i intended it to. That white highlight part is absolutely grotesque!
Or maybe its the colour palette thats affecting the whole piece?
Of course, i could just look-up some tutorials, but where's the fun in that?
EDIT:
The highlighted part bugged me too mch. Had to go back and change it.

happy new year!
happy chinese new year to all you oriental brothers & sisters.
during the holidays, i went to stay over a friend's house (who i'm doing the cups business with) and went to see their factory while i was at it.
here are some of the samples i brought back. seeing the samples (and the quality of them) spurted quite a bit of enthusiasm and life back into those of us involved. So lets hope this vibe keeps up.
